Generations of London English

Our goals

Our five primary goals

1.

To understand the life course of the newest features of London English in the first two generations of users, retesting features our team described 15 years ago

2.

To examine how the use of vernacular language changes over the lifespan

3.

To deconstruct monolithic constructs like Multicultural London English, Cockney, and Black British English into layered repertoires in social space

4.

To lay the foundation for a London English Corpus, the first to span generation, year of recording, social class, ethnicity, and gender, as a novel resource for long-term dialect tracking

5.

To clarify real-world implications for social perceptions and social mobility
